Students spark powerful dialogue on energy future at Earth Day event

Future of Energy

The Sustainable Energy Student Ambassador organization hosted an inspiring interdisciplinary student panel titled “Future of Energy” on April 22.  The dynamic and deeply thoughtful conversation brought together student voices from across campus.

The session was moderated by Shikha Sharma, organization advisor, and opening remarks were given by Jessica Pierson Moore, senior geologist and director of the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey.

The panel showcased insightful perspectives from students, including environmental geoscience majors John Barton and Allison Clark, engineering major Nhan Khuu, biology major Emily Protain and Olivia Sokos from the College of Law. Other undergraduate students from different disciplines also contributed to the dialogue. The conversation was thoughtful, forward-looking and filled with fresh perspectives — from technology, policy, environment to social science.

“We need all forms of energy to build a sustainable future” was at the heart of the discussion, and students did not shy away from tough questions. They delved into complexity, explored trade-offs and highlighted the need for inclusive solutions.

Sharma highlighted that West Virginia’s unique energy legacy makes it a critical player — not just in today’s energy landscape, but in leading innovation, integration and balanced progress across the entire energy spectrum. She said she was proud to see the next generation stepping up with vision, knowledge and a deep commitment to shaping what comes next.

John Barton, president of SESA, thanked the Institute for Sustainability and Energy Research, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, College of Law and West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey for participating and supporting the event.
