The Regional Research Institute and the Department of Economics will co-host a seminar featuring Adam Scavette, an economic advisor in the community development group at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday (April 11) in Reynolds Hall, Room 5201.

As an applied microeconomist, Scavette researches topics in urban, public and labor economics.

During the seminar, he will join Heather Stephens and David Nason of the RRI to present new research titled “Reversing the Natural Resource Curse: Coal Mine Closures and Poverty in Appalachia.”

Covered by major media outlets including The New York Times and Bloomberg, his research has been published in the Journal of Urban Economics, Economics Letters and Regional Science and Urban Economics.

While working as an economist at the Richmond Fed, he helped develop the SOS weekly recession indicator using unemployment insurance claims data.

Scavette earned his doctoral degree in public policy from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 2024. He also holds advanced degrees in engineering and economics from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Edinburgh, respectively. He is currently a visiting researcher at the West Virginia University Regional Research Institute.
