The University’s Esports Business and Entertainment program will host the Responsible Gaming and Digital Entertainment Symposium starting at 9 a.m. Monday (March 10) at the Mountainlair, Gluck Theatre.
Created in collaboration with the School of Sport Sciences Bolton Center for Sports Ethics and the John Chambers College of Business and Economics Center for Responsible Gaming Research, the first-of-its-kind event at the University allows students across campus to connect with leaders in the digital entertainment and gaming fields.
“The vision we had when we launched the Esports Business and Entertainment program was to be able to have the ability to do things like this where we can have all these partners from across campus who see that esports is something that works well with all of these other potential career paths,” WVU Academic Director of Esports Chris Scroggins said.
“This is going to be a really unique event that is going to give our students who are excited about these fields a chance to get to network and learn from some great professionals that we’re able to get here on campus.”
The symposium will span the full day, starting at 9 a.m. with various presentations and panels and wrapping up with a Student Social and Networking Opportunity from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair, Shenandoah Room.
Speakers at the event will focus on technology, regulation, business, marketing, responsible gaming, esports, traditional sport, women in the industry and future research.
One of the presenters who has been crucial in the process of bringing the event to life is Benjamin Truman, founder of Mediatroopers and Red Apple Tech. Truman is a 2007 University graduate.
“So much of what’s going to be talked about is coming from the perspective of things I wish people would have told me when I was a student,” Truman said. “This will be a great event that’s going to really help generate some excitement for what Chris and the WVU Esports program is doing. We want to show people that, if they’re in the business school, they should be taking the Esports and Entertainment courses because it’s fun and there are a lot of ways that all of this stuff is able to cross over with each other.
“That’s the purpose of events like these, showing all the possibilities for where you can take these passions you have.”
Staff leaders and students are encouraged to RSVP for the event.
