WVU looks ahead to 10-year reaccreditation process

Campus Pedestrian Bridge

West Virginia University is slated for its reaffirmation of accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission this year.

The institution is on the commission’s standard pathway, which involves comprehensive evaluations in Years 4 and 10 of the 10-year cycle. The last four-year review occurred in 2018.

The reaffirmation of the accreditation process consists of a self-study and an HLC team visit to campus.

The self-study includes reports from across the University system to demonstrate how the institution is meeting the HLC’s five evaluation criteria:

  • Mission,

  • Integrity: Ethical and responsible conduct,

  • Teaching and Learning: Quality, resources and support,

  • Teaching and Learning: Evaluation and improvement, and

  • Resources, planning and institutional effectiveness.

Associate Provost for Curriculum and Development Louis Slimak, who also serves as the University’s accreditation liaison, has been leading efforts to gather input from across the WVU System to compile the report.

Once the self-study is complete, there will be an open comment period for University community members to share any final feedback before the report is submitted to the HLC.

During its University visit later in the spring semester, the HLC team will hold meetings with the campus community for general feedback and to discuss specific topics related to the five criteria. Meeting topics and dates will be announced once they are finalized with the HLC team.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate at all points in the accreditation process to demonstrate their pride in the institution and investment in the process.
