The Department of Psychology in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences has launched a 15-credit hour certificate in behavior analysis, which equips students to solve practical challenges across industries including education, health care, research and business.

The certificate offers students a pathway to expand their expertise in psychology and behavior analysis and learn essential skills in understanding and modifying behavior through evidence-based practices. The certification opens career pathways in areas where behavioral interventions can be applied to improve individual outcomes and improve organizational performance.

Courses focus on topics like behavioral principles, applied behavior analysis and ethics. Students apply what they learn in the classroom through supervised fieldwork throughout the certification program.

The certificate is accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International, allowing students to pursue further certification as a board-certified assistant behavior analyst.

“Achieving ABAI accreditation for our undergraduate certificate in Behavior Analysis is a significant milestone for the WVU Psychology Department. This accreditation recognizes the quality of our curriculum, our commitment to evidence-based education and our dedication to preparing students for impactful careers,” said Claire St. Peter, chair of the Department of Psychology. “Having an accredited program allows undergraduate students to pursue meaningful careers in educational environments, research and clinical settings.”

Psychology majors looking to enhance their knowledge of behavior analysis can pair their major with this certificate to complement their current coursework. The certificate program may be of particular value to students interested in topics like special education, drug and addiction research, animal training, physical rehabilitation and muscle dynamics, and human or animal behavior.

Students majoring in education, social work and health-related disciplines may also find the program valuable, as behavior analysis is increasingly used to improve outcomes in educational settings and to support people with developmental disabilities or behavioral challenges.

The certificate is also well-suited for working professionals who want to enhance their skill set.
