WVU Chamber Singers showcase world premiere

Chamber Singers

The  WVU Chamber Singers will present the world premiere of “This Fair Olive Tree,” a Passion oratorio by composition student Jonathan White, at 3 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 9) in the Canady Creative Arts Center.

Along with an instrumental ensemble, this large choral work features soprano Julia Giuliani and baritone Alan Cline. The work illustrates the death of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of one of the most fascinating and controversial figures in Christianity, Mary Magdalene.

White received a summer research grant through the WVU SURE program to support his efforts. “While this work presents a biblical story, it is a story that can resonate with believers and non-believers alike. The story includes drama, loss and love. Something for everyone,” he said.

The concert is free to the public; however, donations will be accepted. All proceeds will benefit students attending the American Choral Directors Association national conference in Dallas.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to present a brand new work in Morgantown,” said Kym Scott, director of choral activities and the conductor of the work.

“Presenting a new work is a great challenge for all involved, and I am excited to be able to showcase the work of our students. Jonathan White is an extremely talented composer, and I am excited to see where his career will take him.”
