The WVU Biosafety Office with the University’s Environmental Health and Safety Department, in conjunction with the Association for Biosafety and Biosecurity, has announced October as ABSA International Biosafety and Biosecurity Month. The Biosafety Office will share information with the research community throughout the month.
This year's focus is Institutional Biosafety Committee protocols. IBC protocols are required for any research involving recombinant DNA, pathogens, human-derived materials, biologically active agents, exotic (non-native) organisms or certain types of field research.
If you’re working with these types of materials and do not have an IBC protocol, contact the Biosafety team at BioSafety@WVUHSC.onmicrosoft.com. If you already have an IBC protocol, verify that it is not expired and the information on it is current.
We also would like to extend the invitation to meet the new Biosafety team. Within the past year, Matt Stinoski was promoted to institutional biosafety officer and Josh Parenti joined as associate biosafety officer. In lieu of events across campus, we will come to you for a meet and greet. We can swing by your lab or office with information and giveaways. Contact at BioSafety@WVUHSC.onmicrosoft.com to schedule a time.
Additional information related to IBC and other biosafety topics will be shared through your chemical hygiene officers.
