Libraries announce workshops taking place this month

Library Research Skills Workshop

WVU Libraries is announcing its October lineup of workshops designed to enhance research and data management skills.

Led by the research support and engagement team, these virtual sessions cater to both new and experienced researchers.

Workshops cover a range of essential topics including data management planning, R and Python programming, intellectual property, systematic reviews and more.

By taking advantage of these services, you can streamline your research process, reduce stress and focus on making meaningful contributions to your field. Our team of experts is dedicated to supporting you on your research journey, offering insights on how to effectively leverage library resources and open access tools.

Featured October workshops include the following:

Using Foundation Directory to Find Funding

Come learn how to use Foundation Directory, the most comprehensive prospect research tool for fundraisers, with more than 239,000 grantmaker profiles. You will learn how to search for grantmakers who have funded organizations working on causes and with communities similar to those you serve. This online training will cover how to find funding through foundations and grants using Foundation Directory.

Using Pivot to Find Funding and Grants

Identifying new funding sources for your research can be a challenge. Learn how the database Pivot-RP can support your search. Pivot is a grant-finding database supported by the Office of Sponsored Programs and the WVU Libraries. It allows researchers to create custom profiles and search for research funding opportunities that align closely with their individual research programs.

During this online workshop, explore how to use Pivot advanced search features to locate funding based on funding type, applicant type and keywords. You will also learn how to receive funding alerts and search for past awards and calls for conference proposals.

Data Visualization and Presentation with R and RStudio

R/RStudio, an open-source statistical analysis software freely usable on personal computing devices, is the focus of this workshop. Participants will be guided on visualizing data through the open-source package ggplot2 and presenting analyses and findings with RMarkdown. While prior experience with R and RStudio is beneficial, attendance at “First Steps with R and RStudio” and “Data Cleaning and Analysis with R and RStudio” is recommended. Participants should bring a laptop with administrative privileges.

Data Cleaning and Analysis with Python

Python, an open-source statistical analysis software, is freely available for use on personal computing devices. This workshop focuses on imparting data cleaning concepts and functions using both Base Python and the open-source library Pandas. Participants will also delve into fundamental data analysis functions integrated into the software. While prior experience with Python is beneficial, attendance at the “First Steps with Python” is recommended.

Our team of experts is dedicated to supporting you through your research journey, offering insights on how to effectively leverage library resources and open access tools.
