Similar to physical First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid teaches individuals how to assist others experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis until professional assistance is available or the crisis is resolved.
Attendees will learn the risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for additional support.
To accommodate faculty and staff schedules, the training will consist of self-guided online learning and an instructor-led session. Participants must complete the online work and attend the in-person session to receive certification.
The virtual, instructor-led portion will take place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 18.
This training is open to all community members. The cost of attendance is $40 per participant, with a discounted rate of $25 for current WVU employees and students.
WVU employees should check with their supervisors or department for attendance sponsorship. Pending approval, 7.5 continuing education hours for West Virginia licensed social workers will be available at an additional cost of $40.
