The Center for Community Engagement will host a blood drive to bring more awareness to sickle cell disease from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Sept. 17) in the Mountainlair.
The most compatible blood match for patients receiving blood transfusions often comes from donors of the same race or similar ethnicity. Now, more than ever, the American Red Cross needs the help of blood donors who are Black.
Blood given to patients with rare blood types or conditions like sickle cell disease must be matched closely to avoid complications. There are more than 600 antigens on the surface of red blood cells, and some are unique to specific racial ethnic groups.
Walk-in donation slots are also available.
The blood drive is being held in conjunction with the American Red Cross as part of WVU Diversity Week.
