IACUC announces annual recognition award candidates

Joseph Koontz

Each year, the WVU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee recognizes one person or group that has contributed to the University’s mission for the ethical use of animals in research.

This year’s finalists, both from the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, are Josiah Koontz, who oversees the University’s sheep flock at the Agronomy Research, Education and Outreach Center; and Crystal Smith, a teaching professor of animal and nutritional sciences who oversees the equine facility at the J.W. Ruby Research Research, Education and Outreach Center in Reedsville.

Koontz is recognized for his dependability and knowledge of the species that contribute to his excellent care of the animals. Coworkers also noted his excellent communication skills, attention to detail and admirable patience, evident by the positive responsiveness of the animals.

Smith grew up with horses and has developed educational and professional goals based on her ongoing work with the animals. An asset to the IACUC, she serves as a knowledge expert in the care and use of horses in teaching. Smith also received special notice from peer visitors during the AAALAC International accreditation evaluation for her management of the horse program and the quality of the equine facilities.

The winner will be announced during Research Week 2024.
