Artificial intelligence, like ChatGPT, is now widely available. But it is important to keep privacy in mind, so Information Technology Services offers the following tips.
1. Comply with University policy. Don’t enter WVU data into generative AI tools unless the software you are using was approved through the IT Purchase Request process (WVU Login required).
2. Don’t enter your personal information. AI models “learn” from what they’re given, so don’t hand over your personal information or anyone else’s.
3. Read the privacy notice. The company might be able to see your chats, even if they’re anonymized. Be sure that you are comfortable with the data it collects.
4. Consider the future effects. It might be fun to upload pictures of yourself to generative AI, but remember the company may keep your pictures. Again, read the privacy notice.
