Additional half-day ‘floating’ holiday will be provided for WVU leave-eligible employees

Woodburn Hall

On Nov. 21, Gov. Jim Justice issued an executive order declaring an official half-day holiday on Wednesday, Nov. 22, for state employees.

Since WVU already observes Nov. 22 as a holiday, the University has modified its holiday calendar to include an additional 3.75-hour “floating” holiday (pro-rated by FTE) for leave-eligible employees, effective Nov. 22.

Beginning Nov. 22, leave-eligible employees at all WVU campuses may request approval to use the floating holiday time — or any portion of it — through Applaud.

To qualify for the floating holiday hours, employees must:

     •        Be leave-eligible and on WVU payroll on Nov. 22, 2023, and

     •        either work their full shift or have enough paid leave (SL, AL, CTO) to cover any amount of time absent on the working day prior to and immediately following Nov. 22, 2023.

Note: Employees using terminal leave on Nov. 22, 2023, will not be eligible for the floating holiday hours.

The floating holiday hours may be used any time between Nov. 22, 2023, and June 30, 2024. Floating holiday hours will not be paid out upon termination and are not eligible for transfer to another state agency. Any floating holiday hours not used by June 30, 2024, will be forfeited.

For more information, please reference BOG Talent and Culture Rule 3.6 - Holidays or the Guidelines for Handling and Processing Compensation for Working on a Holiday.

Floating holiday hours also will be provided to WVU Research Corp. employees, and more information will be shared with these employees and supervisors soon.
