WVU Medicine Children’s ECMO team receives national recognition

Silver Level Award

The WVU Medicine Children’s Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation team was awarded the Silver Level Award at the 34th Annual Meeting of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization on Sept. 30 in Seattle, Washington.

ECMO is one of the most advanced forms of life support available for support of patients with critical illness of the cardiac and respiratory systems. 

The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization is the world premier organization for the advancement of extracorporeal life support. 

Dr. Frank Casey, medical director and assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care and team leader, accepted the award on behalf of the WVU Medicine Children’s. 

The team is also led Dr. Christopher Mascio, surgical director; Dr. Dhaval Chauhan, associate surgical director; Dr. Margaret Mathewson, associate medical director; Dr. Jai Udass, medical director of Children’s Heart Center; Mike Anselm, pediatric ECMO coordinator; and Sean Lavelle, director of pediatric perfusion.

WVU Medicine Children’s has maintained the only neonatal and pediatric ECMO program in the state of West Virginia since the program’s origination in 2014. 

This was WVU Medicine Children’s first award from ELSO.
