In an opinion piece being distributed to state media outlets via the West Virginia Press Association, Vice President for Research Fred King describes the rapidly changing traditional land-grant mission and addresses the University’s R1 status amid ongoing Academic Transformation efforts.

“As we adjust our academic offerings to better serve the needs of students, we also must focus our resources on areas of research strength such as astrophysics, neurosciences and robotics, just to name a few,” King writes. “We also need to continue building in areas such as cancer research and data sciences to meet future needs of the state and its citizens.”
