WVU recycles 16 tons of cardboard during move-in weekend

The Office of Sustainability’s move-in weekend cardboard recycling program is an annual event that introduces new students to recycling on campus. In support of sustainability efforts on campus, volunteers helped students and parents recycle 16 tons of cardboard during the University's move-in weekend.

Volunteers ensured cardboard was broken down and placed in recycling facility-bound containers. Plastic packaging and Styrofoam were disposed of in landfill-bound containers.

Cardboard and plastic wrap are two of the highest-volume waste commodities during move-in weekend. Cardboard is also a high-volume recyclable year-round for the University and accounts for approximately 50% of the University's single-stream recycling throughout the year.

Recycling cardboard saves trees, water and energy by reducing the number of chemical pollutants needed to break down wood pulp into the raw material for cardboard.
