Upward Bound to provide free meals to high school students enrolled in college-ready summer program

Upward Bound

The West Virginia University Upward Bound program will serve three free meals a day to approximately 40 high school students at WVU camps this summer.

Thanks to a sponsorship with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program, students who are enrolled in the WVU Upward Bound summer program will eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at Café Evansdale every Monday through Friday from June 26 through Aug. 4, except for July 3 and 4. Upward Bound will receive reimbursements from the USDA for the meals served to income-eligible students.

The summer program is designed to orient students to college life and to help them develop the skills and motivation necessary to be successful in high school and in college.

A federally funded TRIO program, Upward Bound helps high school students overcome barriers to post-secondary education. The program annually serves 60 students in ninth through 12th grades from Preston High School.
