Join the WVU Center for Black Culture and Research in honoring the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, in the Mountainlair Ballroom.
The celebration provides an opportunity for the WVU and greater Morgantown communities to come together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to recognize those in our community who have worked to uphold the principles of equality and social justice.
Eric Deggans, NPR's first full-time TV critic and adjunct instructor of journalism and public policy in the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University, will serve as this year’s keynote speaker.
Deggans crafts stories and commentaries for NPR shows, such as "Morning Edition," "Here & Now" and "All Things Considered." In addition to his NPR work, he is a contributor and media analyst for MSNBC and NBC News.
He joined NPR in September 2013 from the Tampa Bay Times newspaper, where he served as TV/media critic and in other roles for nearly 20 years. A journalist for three decades, he is also the author of “Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation."
Deggans also serves as chair of the Media Monitoring Committee for the National Association of Black Journalists.
This year's MLK Achievement Award will be presented to longtime former Student Life administrator Michael Ellington.
This event is free and open to the public.
