Additional half-day ‘floating’ holiday provided for WVU leave-eligible employees

Following Gov. Jim Justice’s updated proclamation declaring Friday, Dec. 23, as a full-day state holiday for public employees, WVU has issued 3.75 hours of floating holiday time for the date that was already a University-observed holiday.

The floating holiday time is in addition to the University’s decision to close for a full day on Friday, Dec. 30, as a result of the Governor’s initial proclamation.

Leave-eligible employees at all of WVU’s campuses can now request approval to use the floating holiday time – or any portion of it – through Applaud.

To qualify for the floating holiday hours, employees must:

  • Be leave-eligible and on the WVU payroll on Dec. 23, 2022, and

  • Either work their full shift or have enough paid leave (SL, AL, CTO) to cover any amount of time absent on the working day prior to and immediately following Dec. 23, 2022.

Note: Employees using terminal leave on Dec. 23, 2022, are not eligible for the floating holiday hours.

The floating holiday hours may be used between Dec. 23, 2022, and June 30, 2023. Floating holiday hours will not be paid out upon termination and are not eligible for transfer to another state agency. Any floating holiday hours not used by June 30, 2023, will be forfeited.

For more information, please reference BOG Talent and Culture Rule 3.6 - Holidays or the Guidelines for Handling and Processing Compensation for Working on a Holiday.

Floating holiday hours also will be provided to WVU Research Corp. employees, and more information will be shared with these employees and supervisors soon.
