Star Talk logo

The Chinese studies program in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics and the West Virginia Department of Education will host STARTALK beginning spring 2023.

High school students will learn the Chinese language and culture through activities related to science, technology, engineering, arts and math as they teletransport from West Virginia to Mandarin-speaking areas.

This free, 16-month engagement program consists of virtual classes and a summer immersive residential camp slated for July 21 through Aug. 5. All the expenses are covered by the STARTALK grant.

This is the first time that WVU will host a STARTALK program on campus.

The program has received more than 70 applications from more than 30 high schools in eight different states. Approximately 60 percent of the applicants have been admitted to the program and nearly 50 percent of them are interested in the WVU High School ACCESS early college program.

Find more information and apply to participate in STARTALK.

The STARTALK program is recruiting summer camp counselors and WVU students are strongly encouraged to apply for these positions. Students will have the opportunity to use their Mandarin language and leadership skills in an enthusiastic work environment. Counselors will receive a competitive stipend.

Apply to become a summer camp counselor.
