Defend Your Data: Update passwords for stronger security and don’t reuse WVU credentials

cyber security

Creating something that is easy to remember but hard to guess is key to a strong password.

During National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Information Technology Services recommends keeping these three words in mind when creating a password or passphrase: Long, Unique, Complex.

  • The longer the password, the harder it is to guess. WVU Login passwords are now required to be at least 12 characters under the Password Standard.

  • Each account needs its own unique password. Incorporate a favorite quote, a song title or your favorite athlete’s name and it becomes more difficult to guess.

  • Passwords that use numbers, capital letters and symbols are the hardest to crack. Use a combination of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and special characters.

A password manager can help you remember and keep passwords safe in one convenient location. Some popular password managers include LastPass, Keeper, Dashlane, and 1Password.

Remember: Never reuse your WVU Login password for personal, non-University accounts and never share it with anyone or write it down for someone to find.
