Faculty invited to review new draft of University Procedures document

Flying WV pedestrian bridge campus

As part of the University’s Academic Transformation efforts, a top priority this fall is to revise the University’s Procedures for Faculty Appointment, Annual Evaluation, Promotion and Tenure document. This document, which governs the annual, promotion, and tenure evaluation processes, was last updated in 2014.

The goal of the changes is two-fold:

• To expand the definition of what counts as teaching, research and service; and

• To ensure rigor and consistency in our faculty evaluation processes, and to provide greater transparency about ongoing University practices.

The Office of the Provost has been engaging with faculty and administrators across the WVU system in an iterative process since February 2021. This fall, office reps have been hosting a series of nearly two dozen town-hall style meetings to highlight significant changes to the document and provide context before it is shared in its entirety.

Now, an annotated version of the new draft University Procedures document is available for faculty review and comment. The open comment period runs through Friday, Nov. 11.

Full-time faculty are encouraged to view both the current document and the new draft document to best understand where and why the changes were made. There is also a link to a Qualtrics form to submit comments and feedback (anonymously, if preferred).

A link to both documents and complete details are available on the Academic Transformation website. Links are also provided on the WVU Faculty and the Provost’s Office websites.

Comment submissions will be monitored on a regular basis and the Provost’s Office may respond directly to faculty regarding their submissions. The comments and feedback may result in additional changes to the draft document and updates will be shared on the website.

An updated document will be shared and submitted for a vote at the December 2022 Faculty Senate meeting.
