During National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Information Technology Services reminds employees and students to set up two-factor authentication on your personal accounts to create an extra layer of security.
Passwords are compromised regularly. They’re not good enough to protect your personal, sensitive or financial information, or any of the accounts you use online.
Two-factor authentication, also called multi-factor authentication, makes you prove it’s you by requiring multiple things: something you know (your password), something you have (a smartphone or code), or something that makes you unique (biometric identifier such as a fingerprint or facial recognition).
WVU uses Duo for two-factor authentication, but there are other applications to protect your personal accounts such as Microsoft Authenticator and Google Authenticator that are easy to download and begin using. Authenticator apps are more secure than text and email methods.
