Delete, Cancel, Ban: Public Understanding of Free Speech and Censorship Panel

Delete Ban Cancel

Join the WVU Reed College of Media and the WVU College of Law at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Mountainlair Ballrooms for a panel event on free speech and censorship.

Public understanding of what free speech and censorship mean has evolved over recent years outside of constitutional protections and the ways in which the internet has enabled a rise in the expression of false, offensive, harmful and even dangerous expression on digital platforms.

The panel will discuss how popular (mis)understandings of “free speech” and “censorship" are eroding consensus in what is — and what isn’t — protected speech and will help unpack the tensions between tech platforms, the constitution, the regulatory environment and the public.
