Attorney Carrie Showalter has been named assistant dean and executive director of Campus and Community Life as part of a restructuring within the Division of Student Life. Showalter, currently the executive director of the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, will assume her new responsibilities today (July 1).
The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, which includes the Office of Academic Integrity, will join the CARE Team, Student Legal Services, the Student Advocacy Center, the Off-Campus Housing Office and Commuter Student Programs under the umbrella of Campus and Community Life.
"We continually review Student Life's programs and how students engage with them. We recognized that moving the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities to Campus and Community Life would improve access and better serve students who need wraparound services and support," Dean of Students Corey Farris said. "Carrie's experience in the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities and her more than 10 years of service in the Office of Campus and Community Life make her an excellent leader for this newly reimagined department."
The restructuring, following the retirement of Kim Mosby, longtime leader of Campus and Community Life, will provide students with a streamlined experience when seeking assistance from several Student Life departments.
"Students who find themselves in violation of the Code of Conduct may need support from the CARE Team, for example," Showalter said. "I am looking forward to working with these dedicated Student Life professionals who are committed to providing students with support, when and where it's needed."
Showalter, a member of the West Virginia Bar, earned a bachelor's degree in women's studies from the College of Wooster and a law degree from WVU. Since joining WVU in 2007, her responsibilities have included supervising and managing the Student Legal Services Office – coordinating the administration of all cases that fall under the jurisdiction of The Student Code of Conduct and working closely with the Title IX Coordinator regarding the investigation and adjudication of all Rule 1.6 and Title IX matters. In addition, she has served as an adjunct faculty member for the WVU Center for Women's Studies and when appropriate, advocates for education over punitive actions when Code of Conduct violations occur.
Jill Gibson, who currently serves as the associate director for the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, will serve as the director beginning today. Gibson earned a master's degree in secondary education and a law degree from WVU.
