WVU community encouraged to participate in today’s Bike to Work Day

Bike to Work Day

Faculty, staff and the Morgantown community are encouraged to join the National Bike to Work Day events scheduled today (May 20).

Morgantown’s Bike to Work Day is co-organized by WVU’s Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative, Adventure WV and the Office of Sustainability.

The City of Morgantown also supports this initiative and encourages everyone to celebrate biking as not only an outdoor recreation activity but a sustainable form of transportation and essential to the health and well-being of the community.

The following events are free and open to the public:

Noon- 1p.m., West Run Woods Flow Trail Preview, Student Recreation Center Flagpole
This event will be led by Andrew Walker, Adventure WV program support specialist and Morgantown Area Mountain Bike Alliance vice president.

12:15 p.m., Casual Lunch Rail Trail Ride, Hazel Ruby McQuain Park
Join colleagues for a social pedal on Morgantown's fabulous rail trail system. Participants can rent a bike in advance for free from Adventure WV.

4-7 p.m, Ascend WV After Work Social
Ride over to Mountain State Brewery and mingle with Morgantown’s biking community and some of Morgantown's newest residents for Happy Hour.

Those who are interested in tracking their routes for the day can download the free Ride Spot app, hosted by People for Bikes. Through the app, riders can share favorite places to ride in Morgantown and see maps of other routes as well as any photos taken throughout the day.

Both League of American Cyclists, and People for Bikes, are part of the Youth Cycling Coalition, a group of 10 nationally established cycling nonprofits which are piloting their first collaborative programming efforts in Morgantown. Supported by the Smith OEDC, the Coalition’s mission is to keep youth engaged in cycling through structured programming for all ages through young adulthood.

Use the hashtag #BikeThere and add Morgantown as a location on social media to join in on the conversation. All riders are encouraged to wear a helmet. For more information on Bike Week, visit bikeleague.org.
