Sway into Spring with the Morgantown Community Orchestra

Sway into Spring

Waltz your way into the warmer season with the Morgantown Community Orchestra as they take the stage of Lyell B. Clay Theatre of the WVU Loulie, Valerie and William Canady Creative Arts Center Sunday (April 24) at 2 p.m.

From Shostakovich’s catchy Waltz No. 2 to the thunderous brass feature in Ride of the Valkyries to the dramatic and lyrical melodies of Bizet’s Carmen, our audience will walk, or dance, away from this concert humming some of the most memorable tunes from all of Western Art Music.

“Join us for an afternoon of exciting, sentimental, dramatic, and beautiful orchestral music. We are excited to conclude our first season of live performances again with our second concert of the semester in Clay Theater. This concert will take the listener on an emotional journey through an array of characters and moods,” said Alyssa Schwartz, artistic director of the Morgantown Community Orchestra.

Under Schwartz’s baton, WVU alumna and director of bands at Fairmont State University, the Morgantown Community Orchestra will perform Waltz no.2 by Dmitri Shostakovich from his Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 2, Libertango by Astor Piazzolla, selections from Sleeping Beauty, Op. 66 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Carmen Suite No. 1 for Orchestra by Georges Bizet, The Ride of the Valkyries by Richard Wagner and Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach.

The concert will be livestreamed on the WVU Community Music Program YouTube channel.

Designed for intermediate and advanced players in the community and greater region who wish to share and develop their artistic talents, the MCO is one of the largest musical ensembles of West Virginia University’s Community Music Program. The orchestra welcomes instrumentalists of a wide range of musical experience and provides a meaningful opportunity for artistic growth, community engagement and high-quality performance opportunities.

Registration for summer 2022 will open May 9. For more information, contact Eftihia Arkoudis, WVU Community Music Program director, at evarkoudis@mail.wvu.edu or visit www.music.wvu.edu/cmp
