The WVU ADVANCE Center announces a new February virtual speaker series that will focus on how to cultivate a sense of belonging in higher education at all stages of the academic pipeline.
Featuring visiting scholar-practitioner and Big 12 Fellow Adrienne Carter-Sowell from the University of Oklahoma, the ADVANCE Center invites faculty, graduate students, undergraduates and staff to her virtual keynote address “Cultivating a Sense of Belonging in the Academy: Undergraduate, Graduate and Faculty Mentoring at Changing Institutions” Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
Register for this speaker series.
As a professor of psychology and the director of the Gateway to Belonging program for freshman at the University of Oklahoma, Carter-Sowell will share insights from her research programme and discuss proactive approaches to helping both students and faculty succeed in the academy. Her approach provides a robust understanding of the processes at play in today’s changing institutional landscape.
Attendees will engage in discussions on how to cultivate communities and support systems for success, whether they are just starting their academic journey or are tenured professors. They also will develop insights into how social science research informs best practices.
Two additional workshops will be held later in February for advanced doctoral students and early career faculty, as well as academic leaders. To learn more about these smaller, interactive workshops, contact the ADVANCE Center team at wvuadvance@mail.wvu.edu.
Later in 2022, Carter-Sowell will be visiting the WVU campus - COVID permitting - as a Big 12 Fellow. Please let us know if you would like to schedule time for you and your faculty, staff or students to meet with her.
