2021 Performance Review process to begin Jan. 31

In support of West Virginia University’s continued focus on recognizing and rewarding high performance across our institution, the Division of Talent and Culture plans to roll out the 2021 performance review process on Monday, Jan. 31, for classified and non-classified staff and certain FE/AP employees. 

Aligned to WVU’s core values, the annual performance review process is designed to measure an employee’s capabilities, accomplishments, development and overall contributions to the University as well as the critical role each employee plays in bringing our land-grant mission to life. 

The 2021 performance review period will cover Jan. 1- Dec. 31, 2021.

In an effort to streamline and create greater consistency in the performance review process, the Talent and Culture team is implementing the following changes this year: 

  • The overall performance review and approval timeline has been condensed in an effort to expedite the process. As such, first-level supervisors are encouraged to begin discussing preliminary ratings for their direct reports now with second-level supervisors. 

  • Employees will be provided with a pre-review form outside of the performance management system to complete and return to their supervisors. Employees may fill out the form electronically and submit it to their supervisor via email or print and complete the form and deliver a hard copy to their supervisor.

  • To provide supervisors and employees adequate planning time and set consistent expectations, the annual performance review cycle will be held in January each year moving forward.

Beginning Jan. 31, supervisors will receive an email to their WVU account from the performance management system along with instructions to complete the performance review for each eligible employee (those hired prior to July 1, 2021).

Note: As part of this year’s process, WVU Research Corp. employees will use the standard Research Corp. performance management system for completing their reviews.

To help people-leaders prepare for performance reviews, the Employee Relations team will offer a link to an online training module for supervisors to review at their convenience. Supervisors should monitor their email for more information. HR partners also are available to assist supervisors with the process.
