WVU Radiology study shows increase in publications through resident-managed peer mentor program

Dhairya Lakhani

A new study by Dr. Dhairya A Lakhani and his colleagues from WVU Radiology shows marked increase in departmental peer-reviewed publications following implementation of the peer-mentorship program led by resident physicians.

Lakhani and his colleagues wrote, “Time constraints of faculty physicians in a clinically busy residency program can make cultivating effective faculty-student and faculty-resident collaborations challenging for scholarly activity.”

“Strong advantages of utilizing a resident preceptor are that it reduces the time constraints of faculty advisors in a clinically busy program, promotes leadership and teaching by residents, and allows faculty advisors to effectively mentor more trainees,” which resulted in increased academic productivity of their department.

The authors believe this program model can also be replicated in other programs and specialties.
