WVU student Anna Dunham rises to the scene today (Nov. 12) with the release of her lead single with Mon Hills Records “Contradiction,” which can be heard on all platforms.
Working with the WVU student-operated label for the past year, the Granville, Ohio, native has crafted her full-length LP, expected to arrive in January.
“Contradiction is a little piece of middle school-Anna,” Dunham spoke sentimentally about the new single. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter picked this as her debut track with sentiment as her first written song back in eighth grade. She recalls fond memories of her friends and family singing along to her hopeful anthem and looks forward to now sharing it with the world.
Dunham explains the confident lyric, “By saying these words, this is where things turn around. I’m not giving up anymore.” As a song that has grown up with her, it embodies the coming-of-age spirit of recognizing a positive shift in life and taking hold of it with optimism. It’s about the shining light of hope in the relatable experience of youthful hardships.
The track enters with the fluid rumble of electric guitar as Dunham begins with a soft, considerate melody. With the supportive drive of her band of friends behind her, Dunham rises to a powerful, confident sound, a perfect introduction to the artist’s dynamic style.
Pulling from an eclectic range of influences, Dunham’s upcoming album will include styles of indie-pop-rock, folk-singer-songwriter, and even hints of bluegrass. The new artist pairs well next to the current top songbirds like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Lizzy McAlpine.
