ITS cautions against upgrading WVU-owned Macs to Big Sur if you use Jabber softphones

Although Mac users may see that an upgrade to the Big Sur operating system is available, Information Technology Services strongly recommends employees who use Jabber software avoid updating WVU-owned Macs. Testing shows Jabber won’t work correctly with Big Sur unless you are connected to the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

The latest version of Sophos anti-virus does not appear to have the issues that were identified earlier in the semester, so all other WVU-owned Macs should be safe to upgrade. This recommendation includes faculty and staff at the Health Sciences Center.

Personally owned computers that are using the version of Sophos available via freeav.wvu.edu are also safe to upgrade.
