WVU to celebrate first annual Adviser Appreciation Day

Each spring, the University celebrates the achievements of our faculty, staff and students through a series of awards announcements and recognition events. This year, the WVU Academic Advising Council and the Office of the Provost are proud to sponsor a new annual “appreciation day” honoring our academic advisers on all WVU campuses.

Tuesday, April 20, will be the first annual WVU Adviser Appreciation Day, during which all WVU students, faculty and staff are encouraged to show their appreciation for our academic advisers and to celebrate their colleagues across all WVU campuses.

“We know our academic advisers are on the front lines helping to ensure our students’ success every day of the year,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Maryanne Reed. “And the past year has been like none other. The challenges of adapting to a hybrid working and learning environment were many. But our advisers met each challenge head on and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our students’ success.”

To honor their efforts – this year and every year – the University community will celebrate WVU Adviser Appreciation Day in the spring semester. Students, faculty and staff are invited to send messages of thanks, gratitude and appreciation to the hundreds of employees who serve as academic advisers across the WVU system.

A new website highlights inspiring statistics about our academic advisers and provides links to a public Kudoboard for posting messages, downloadable graphics for social media and tips on sending private messages and emails.

The site also includes details from a 2020 survey asking students about their advising experiences at WVU. More than 12,000 students responded to the survey, and an overwhelming majority noted that their advisers are accessible, professional and courteous. When asked what could be improved about their advising experience, nearly 70 percent didn’t provide feedback or responded, “Nothing.”

“These survey results help to quantify and validate the work academic advisers do every day to make WVU a special place for our students,” said Michelle Poland, program director for the Statler College Advising Center and chair of the WVU Academic Advising Council. “This new, annual WVU Adviser Appreciation Day will help shine a light on those efforts and reinforce our values by supporting and acknowledging advisers’ contributions to the WVU community.”

WVU Adviser Appreciation Day will also include the annual Advising Celebration, during which the 2020-21 Nicholas Evans Excellence in Advising Award recipients will be announced. The virtual event is set for 3:30 p.m. Interested participants are asked to RSVP for the event.
