Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Meshea L. Poore continues her weekly series of short videos, exploring topics centered on helping members of the WVU community live, learn and work together with care and respect for each other.
This week’s video, released Feb 2, addresses ableism.
“In very basic terms ‘ableism’ is thinking people with ‘typical’ abilities are somehow superior to people with disabilities,” Poore said. “We often put people in the position of having to explain their disability or defend their need for disability rights, rather than taking the time to accommodate people or create universal accessibility.
The Let’s Talk series, with a new video each Tuesday, will address a diversity of topics, including consent, free speech / counter speech, cultural appropriation, and the land-grant mission.
