Faculty, staff and students who use personally owned Apple computers for study or work should avoid installing the newest Mac operating system, macOS Big Sur, when it is released.
Information Technology Services has identified a compatibility issue with WVU’s Virtual Private Network that could result in loss of Wi-Fi, AirDrop and Bluetooth. We also have not tested Big Sur with WVU applications.
While we do not know the exact release date, ITS anticipates that macOS Big Sur will be available sometime in November. All new OS releases create compatibility risks, and this is the first major version update in 20 years. ITS will announce when it is safe to update your personal machine.
The upgrade to macOS Big Sur will be delayed for all WVU-owned computers, and users should not attempt to update those machines.
If you have already installed macOS Big Sur on your personal machine and encountered problems, contact the ITS Service Desk for assistance at 304-293-4444.
Health Sciences Center employees or students who have issues should contact the HSC Help Desk at 304-293-3631, option 1.
