WVU’s annual Diversity Week will take place on-line this year as the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and campus partners offer a full slate of keynotes, panel discussions and events Oct. 11-16, including Festival of Ideas speaker W. Kamau Bell.
“We will miss the in-person interactions Diversity Week usually brings,” Diversity Outreach Coordinator Aisury Vasquez said. “But in some ways moving things on-line will make these events more accessible than ever. Now students, faculty and staff from all WVU campuses can participate, as well as alumni and the broader community.”
Monday through Friday will feature 10 a.m. keynote addresses via Zoom, covering topics ranging from Indigenous Peoples, disability justice, LGBTQIA+ justice, WVU Vice President Meshea L. Poore’s State of Diversity address and the movement for Black lives and racial justice.
In addition, student panels will explore topics such as intimate partner violence prevention, advancing disability justice on a college campus, issues for Hispanic and Latinx students, Black Lives Matter and student advocacy.
Bell’s Festival of Ideas event is at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 via Zoom.
“We appreciate the many events being planned and organized by campus partners,” Vasquez said. “Our campuses are engaging in these important conversations in creative ways.”
Diversity Week is designed to create an atmosphere that provides the WVU community the opportunity to explore different cultures, engage in discussions that bring new perspectives, and celebrate the presence of, and contributions made by, people of all identities and experiences.
