WVU Research Office and Libraries partner on two ‘Software Carpentry’ workshops

The WVU Research Office and the Libraries Research Commons will offer two four-week long Software Carpentry workshops this semester. These hands-on workshops will cover basic concepts and tools to include program design, version control, data management and task automation. 

Both workshops will be online and have limited space.

Basic Python Workshop

This introduction to the software application Python runs from Oct. 6-27 and meets every Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. 

Topics to include:

  • Python Basics and Visualizing Tabular Data

  • Loops and Lists

  • Visualizing Multiple Files and Conditional Statements

  • Functions and Errors

Bash/Git Workshop

This introduction to Bash and Github runs from Oct. 8-29 and meets every Thursday from 4-6 p.m. 

Topics to include:

  • Introducing the Shell and Navigating Files and Directories 

  • Working With Files and Directories and Pipes and Filters

  • Creating a Repository, Tracking Changes, Exploring History, and Ignoring Things

  • Remotes in GitHub, Collaborating, and Conflicts
