Intended for early career faculty and graduate students, the Library’s Scholarly Communication workshops are designed to help you maximize your scholarly presence, find the right journal to publish in, and measure your scholarly impact.
Dispelling the Myths of Open Access: Making Informed Choices about Open Access Publishing Opportunities
This workshop will define characteristics of open access vs. traditional publishing venues; define ways to evaluate open access journal quality, including the identification of predatory journals; present tools available to find an appropriate journal in which to publish; and talk about WVU open access memberships and the WVU Open Access Author Fund and how they affect article processing charges for WVU authors. There will be two opportunities to participate in this workshop.

Creating and Managing Your Online Scholarly Presence
Maintaining an online scholarly presence is an increasingly important component of being a successful researcher. By developing a strong identity online, you can make your scholarship visible to larger audiences and potentially make a larger impact in your field. During this workshop, you will learn how to build and manage your online scholarly presence. We will look at popular platforms for scholarly profiles, strategies for increasing the readership of your research, and tools for tracking the impact of your work.

Where Should I Publish? Using Library Resources for Manuscript Submission Decisions
Find the right journal to publish your article in using library resources such as the Web of Science Core Collection, InCites Journal Citation Reports, and EndNote Match. Bring your completed or partial journal manuscript title/abstract and keywords to search and analyze the literature. This workshop will require an EndNote Basic account registration.

Measuring and Promoting the Impact of Your Research
Measuring your impact is an important step in the research process for gathering evidence of how your research will impact society. It is also important when applying for positions, for promotion and tenure, and for grant funding. This introductory workshop will provide an overview of traditional and nontraditional scholarly metrics and will discuss tools to measure research impact. Topics covered include: Citation analysis; Journal impact factor; h-index; altmetrics; and selecting publication venues.
