The WVU Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services is being recognized for its commitment to offering opportunities through internships and providing outstanding training experiences that support and facilitate professional growth and competence of doctoral psychology interns.

The American Psychological Association Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation voted to reaffirm accreditation of the Health Service Psychology Internship Program at the WVU Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services.

“I am grateful for our training staff who have helped shape and improve our training program over the years,” said Matthew Kellar, interim training director and assistant director of the Carruth Center. “I am also thankful for our trainees, who always bring new energy and perspectives that better enables our Center to provide quality services.”

“It is vital that we continue to train and develop competent mental healthcare providers as the demand for mental healthcare continues to increase on university campuses across the country,” he added.

The decision is based on the APA Commission of Accreditation’s professional judgement that the Carruth Center has demonstrated that it adheres to the Standards of Accreditation in Health Service Psychology.

The Commission highlighted the following:

  • The quality of training provided by the Carruth Center is in substantial compliance with the Standards of Accreditation.

  • The internship program demonstrates due diligence in ensuring interns have interests, aptitudes and prior academic and practicum experiences that are appropriate for the internship’s training aims and competencies.

  • Program staffing and leadership are of appropriate quality.

  • The program provides timely and appropriate communications with interns’ doctoral programs and with the Commission.

Accreditation is a process that encourages improvement through continuous self-study and review.

"I am thankful for the time and energy that our staff has put into crafting a quality training experience,” Kellar said.

The program has been re-accredited for 10 years, which is the maximum duration of re-accreditation. The next site visit is scheduled to be held in 2029.
