Workshop on Motivation, Privilege, and Power in the Classroom to be held

library

Participants in Motivation, Privilege and Power in the Classroom (April 2 from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 104, Downtown Library) will have the opportunity to examine their course language, policies and assessments, as well as formulate strategies to enhance their students' motivation to learn.

We all want motivated students, and we know that students learn better when they are motivated to do so—for the right reasons. This interactive session will explore some of the research on motivation and—especially—de-motivation, and we'll discuss the insights it can offer us for our own teaching practices.

Presenter Kevin M. Gannon is director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and professor of history at Grand View University. Gannon writes for “The Chronicle of Higher Education,” gives frequent talks and workshops, and has appeared in the Oscar-nominated documentary “13th,” directed by Ava DuVernay. His latest book, “Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto,” has just been published by West Virginia University Press and is now available from various retailers.
