Community Music Program enrolls for strings classes

Violin for kids

The Community Music Program is gearing up to offer its Strings fling in March, with the start of two courses.

"Beginning Group Violin for Kids," for ages 6-10 years old, is a class designed to give young children their first exposure to the musical world of strings. Under the direction of Senior Violin instructor Catherine Baker, BGVK will provide the stimulation of a group environment with the individual attention of private instruction, as a fun and effective approach to learn about and play the violin. This four-Saturday group class, beginning March 7 from 10-10:45 a.m., will include basic violin technique, music-reading skills, movement, singing and playing violin-related games. The last session will present a mini-recital of accomplishments. (Small violins will be available, for usage on the WVU campus premises, if needed.) This class can only accommodate six young students maximum. Register early. If registering by March 3, the tuition is $46 + $10 processing fee.

Do you already play the violin, viola, cello or bass and wish you could play in an exclusive, school-aged string ensemble? Register to take part in a small strings ensemble which will meet for two-hour workshops, three Saturdays throughout the month of March (7, 14, 21 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.). We'll even try to squeeze in a performance opportunity or two to finish off the mini-clinics. We will learn fun and exciting new music, as well as expand upon techniques like vibrato and shifting. Prepare to make music, at the Creative Arts Center, with old and new friends. All music will be provided. Under the direction of Senior Strings Instructor, Catherine Baker, these three two-hour sessions will be open to students ages 12-18 with some instrumental experience in-hand (ability as determined by the instructor). The cost will be $85 for the package of three two-hour sessions (if registered by March 3). $94 + $10 term Processing Fee if registering after March 3.
