Medicine researchers awarded grant to improve challenging respiratory health

Bingyun Li

In addition to two active grants from Department of Defense-Defense Health Agency, Drs. Bingyun Li and Shichao Zhang in orthopaedics have been awarded a third two-year grant from DoD in the amount of $304,000.

This new award will develop innovative nano-membranes with rechargeable photo-antimicrobial activities for respiratory health. The novel membranes may reduce infections from bacteria and viruses. Dr. Zhang, postdoc in Professor Bingyun Li’s laboratory, is the principal investigator of the new grant. Dr. Zhang has published three peer-reviewed papers and has given two oral presentations at national conferences since he joined Professor Li’s laboratory in 2017.

Professor Li has supervised 103 trainees at WVU, and his trainees have been awarded fellowships or prizes more than 60 times. At the national level, under Professor Li’s supervision, his trainees have been awarded two Pre-Doctoral Fellowships from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education in 2012 and 2013, a Resident Research Grant from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and a Travel Grant from the Electrochemical Society in 2015, the Star Abstract Award from the Orthopaedic Biomaterials Group of Society for Biomaterials in 2018, and this DoD research grant in 2020.
