As part of our land-grant mission, WVU is committed to ensuring a more sustainable future — across our state and around the world. And a great way for students, faculty and staff to help “gold and blue make green” is by participating in RecycleMania 2020.
Participation is easy. Between Sunday, Feb. 2, and Sunday, March 29, drop off your plastic, glass, metal, cardboard, paper and drink cartons in one of our more than 1,000 recycling bins across our Morgantown campus.
RecycleMania is a competition among colleges and universities based in the U.S. and Canada to promote waste reduction on their campuses. Throughout an eight-week period, each school reports on the amount of recycling and trash collected each week.
The schools are ranked in various categories.WVU is participating in the diversion category, which involves reporting recycling and trash rates from the entire campus on a weekly basis.
Based on our recent WVU sustainability survey responses, students and employees overwhelmingly shared that their top priorities were reducing, reusing and recycling and conserving resources to reduce their personal impact. Students and employees also requested more specific education on how to recycle on campus.
The RecycleMania program is a great way for our campus community to get involved and make a positive impact on the environment.
Our goal this year is to recycle 250,000 pounds of single-stream recycling through the RecycleMania program. So please do your part to help us achieve or surpass this goal.
As part of the program, we will hold a special recycling event Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Mountainlair. Activities will include a recycling challenge and knowledge test, the chance to upcycle something to take home, and free hot cocoa and hot cider fills in your personal reusable mug. Stay tuned for additional details.
In the meantime, check out this video to learn more about how recycling works on campus.
