WVU monitoring coronavirus outbreak

WVU students or faculty contemplating or planning to travel abroad, especially to China and other locations where coronavirus is present, should take extra precautions and be aware of the public health situations at their destination.

Currently, the Office of Global Affairs is monitoring the situation in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. The State Department has issued a Level 3 Advisory asking that people stop all non-essential travel to China. As additional cases appear in different parts of the world, the office will inform travelers of best practices and has already reached out to those already or planning to travel to the affected areas.

“If you have concerns, or experience symptoms of coronavirus, it’s important to contact WVU Medicine Student Health at 304-285-7200,” said Carmen Burrell, director. “Understanding your symptoms can help mitigate risk of spreading infection of coronavirus or other illness during cold and flu season.”

WVU requires faculty, staff and students to register all university-related travel. By registering, travelers will receive updates on regional concerns, including Novel Coronavirus. Registering also ensures access to the University’s international medical, safety and security service, including medical coverage while abroad.

Generally, Burrell advises following responsible hygiene practices standard with flu season, and to follow these recommendations from the Center for Disease Control:

  • Avoid contact with sick people.

  • Cover your face when coughing or sneezing to help eliminate the spread of germs.

  • Avoid animals (alive or dead), animal markets, and products that come from animals (such as uncooked meat).

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

  • Older adults and travelers with underlying health issues may be at risk for more severe disease and should discuss travel with their healthcare provider.
