Public Lecture: ‘Save Venice: A History’ (Friday, September 20, 3:30 p.m.)

Save Venice

Join a lecture Friday (Sept. 20) at 3:30 p.m. in Woodburn Hall, Rm 101. Professor Christopher Carlsmith (History, UMass-Lowell) will discuss the history of the Save Venice Foundation from its inception in 1966 until the present.

Perched in the middle of a lagoon on the Adriatic Sea, Venice has existed in a tenuous balance with nature for more than one thousand years. Recently, it has faced additional challenges of pollution, industrialization, climate change, depopulation and mass tourism. Carlsmith describes the efforts of this American non-profit to conserve and protect paintings, sculptures, books, and even entire churches – a case study of a kind of “public history.”
