In a report released by the US Government Accountability Office, the West Virginia Center for End-of-Life Care with the e-Directive Registry was recognized as a national leader in advance care planning and the development of a statewide registry.  According to the report, West Virginia is one of three states with both an advance directive registry and a Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment registry system.  West Virginia is also one of only two states that have a system to provide access to authorized health care professionals with both registries.

The GAO report highlights the educational efforts by the West Virginia Center for End-of-Life Care to help improve understanding of advance directive completion, use of the registry systems, and initiating conversations for advance care directives.  Specifically, the report mentions the collaboration with the West Virginia Network of Ethics Committees, training manuals, and continuing education efforts by the West Virginia Center for End-of-Life Care.
