Workshop 1 of ‘How People Learn’ series announced

The Teaching and Learning Commons logo

Understanding how people learn should be at the heart of instructional practice at all levels: when we design our courses and write syllabi, when we plan for class, and in-the-moment pedagogical decisions. The first in a three-part series on big cognitive constructs in the context of our everyday teaching, this workshop will focus on Expert/Novice Differences, Disciplinary Thinking and Schema Theory. It is intended for all WVU community members who teach—faculty, staff, graduate students.

Hosted by the Teaching and Learning Commons, this workshop will take place Feb. 7 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Room 104 of the downtown library. Lunch will be served.

Presenters: John Oughton, Associate Director, Teaching and Learning Commons; Malayna Bernstein, Director, Learning Sciences Programs, Department of Learning Sciences and Human Development

The two-hour session will begin with an hour of exploration of keys topics related to learning theory, followed by an hour-long segment during which facilitators will guide participants in applying concepts to their own practice. Participants can attend both hours or come only to the first hour. The first hour will be webcast.
