Mavis Grant, a nurse and founder of Empty Bowls, was honored Monday (Jan. 21) during the annual MLK Jr. Unity Breakfast with the MLK Achievement Award. It’s given to the nominee from West Virginia who best exemplifies working to fulfill King’s commitment.
Empty Bowls is a countywide charitable effort to provide assistance to Monongalia County agencies supporting individuals and families threatened by food insecurity.
The MLK Jr. Unity Breakfast celebration, now in its 29th year, provides an opportunity for the WVU and greater Morgantown communities to come together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and to recognize those in our community who have worked to uphold the principles of equality and social justice.
Meshea Poore, vice president of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at West Virginia University, delivered the keynote address for the event. Poore leads the Division’s efforts to create an inclusive and supportive campus environment.
Following the breakfast, 56 volunteers completed a variety of service projects in Morgantown totaling more than 224 hours served and cultivating an impact of $5,600.
