The West Virginia University Office of Undergraduate Research and the Office of the Provost announce the expansion of the Faculty Award for Distinction in Mentoring Undergraduates in Research. Nominations will be accepted through Feb.12 via the online nomination portal, which can be found on the Faculty Awards site or the Undergraduate Research site.

The award was developed to recognize, reward and encourage faculty members who mentor undergraduate students in scholarly activities including research and creative endeavors. Beginning with the Spring 2019 award cycle, these awards will now recognize exceptional undergraduate research mentors in four disciplinary categories with $1000 awards to support continued undergraduate research needs.

The selection committee will make awards in the categories of behavioral and social sciences, biosciences and health sciences, humanities and the arts (including the performing arts) and physical sciences and technology.

“We’re thrilled to be able to expand this award to recognize more members of our faculty for their hard work not only in their innovative research, but specifically in their mentorship of our undergraduate students,” said Michelle Richards Babb, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. “Expanding the award allows us to further highlight our research enterprise as an R1 institution such that we can promote research experiences for students at all levels and disciplines.”

Award recipients will be announced publicly this spring. They will also be recognized by President E. Gordon Gee and Provost Joyce McConnell at the annual faculty and staff awards dinner at Blaney House.
