Student Engagement and Leadership holds inaugural first-year student leadership retreat

The Office of Student Engagement and Leadership kicked off its 10-week leadership workshop series with an overnight retreat for first-year students at the Westvaco Natural Resources Center at the WVU Research Forest, Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

The retreat, hosted by the First-Year Leadership Program and facilitated by Adventure WV, was designed to enhance first-year student leadership skills, foster interpersonal skills and build trust with peer mentors.

“Despite the bad weather, more than 40 student leaders attended the retreat,” said Deron Jackson, assistant director of student leadership development. “The mentors and first-year students were engaged throughout the retreat, and from my assessment, each took away ideas and skills that will help them become better leaders and more involved on campus.”

The new program is designed to empower the next generation of student leaders on campus through an inclusive and enjoyable environment and serves as a platform for positive mentorship by connecting first-year students with upperclassmen.

“I look forward to working with this group next semester and to build off of the excitement and cohesiveness established at the retreat,” Jackson said.
